Robber-proof foam for cash-in-transit vans

2013-04-17 09:00

Cash-in-transit vans will get a robber-proof foam shield for extra security.

G4S Cash Solutions SA planned to roll out 40 vehicles equipped with rapidly expanding foam, which hardens to form a rubbery barrier between the valuables and the robber, Joburg daily, The Star, reported today.

This was intended to deter criminals and replace armed security personnel in the back of the van.

When triggered, two chemicals were forced, at a high pressure, from cylinders in the armoured vehicle’s vault. The liquids combined and, within seconds, turned to a foam which filled the vault room.

The foam could not be burned by chemicals or by fire and exploded or cracked if shot at.

“It’s a lot safer, because you don’t have to have people risking their lives to save the system,” G4S sales director Hannes Venter was quoted as saying.

The foam could be activated by any attempt to open the truck’s back door when not in a secured location. Even the driver had no power to open the door.

The trucks would be on the streets by the end of the year.
