Rolling Stone SA in all its funkiness

2011-12-03 14:13

Musicians of South Africa unite! Your messiah, the good book of all that tells your “side of the story”, Rolling Stone magazine, is here. Or so the MC and consulting editor Siyabonga “Slikour” Metane said.

The rapper made the announcement in his usual dramatic manner on Thursday night at the official launch of the SA version of the magazine with the legendary Bra Hugh Masekela as its cover star. Sadly, I forgot to have my copy autographed to keep as an investment.

The event was held in the middle of Joburg CBD, the scary part near Noord taxi rank at Lister Building.

The performances kicked off with Blk Jks followed by Masekela, who commanded the stage with his trumpet and boisterous voice.

During the break, I spotted Bridget Masinga who’s pulling double duty as a host of All Access and The Road to Miss SA reality show. Also saw Thandiswa Mazwai, AKA, Lorna Maseko and Lalla Hiriyama in short shorts. Singer Tamara Dey was glam in a flowing off-white dress.

I expected to see a whole lot more local musos though. When Tumi and the Volume took to the stage, girls took off their shoes to jump up and down and sang along.

As for me, I made a beeline for my favourite rocker, Paul Wilson from Southern Gypsy Queen, who was chilling with Greg Carlin from Zebra and Giraffe and Neil Pauw of The Parlotones. Awesome guys!

The best part about the party was the relaxed atmosphere, stripped of the usual Joburg pretentiousness.
