Russian woman dies after ‘12-hour customs wait’

Moscow – An elderly Russian woman died of a heart attack after standing for 12 hours in a queue to cross the border from China, reports said today.

The 74-year-old resident of a Siberian town of Borzya was a tourist coming back from China through the busy checkpoint in the village of Zabaikalsk when she felt sick and collapsed after a long wait.

“The woman had 52kg of luggage instead of the 50kg (allowed), and when they began to inspect her, her heart couldn’t take it,” an official at a tour agency Roza Vetrov told Interfax news agency.

“This is not a unique incident of people feeling sick,” he said. “There are many tourists ... Standing for 12 hours, and sometimes longer, is difficult.”

The Zabaikalsk checkpoint is on a branch of Russia’s Transsiberian railroad going to China’s Manzhouli city, which caters to Russian tourists and shoppers after cheaper Chinese goods.
