Rwandan opposition calls for UN to try DR Congo crimes

2010-10-02 15:49

Nairobi, Kenya – A Rwandan opposition group has urged the United Nations to set up an international court to try perpetrators of crimes committed by armed groups in the DR Congo and detailed in a report by the world body’s rights agency.

The unregistered Unified Democratic Forces called on the UN Security Council to “punish genocide and crimes against humanity, including the establishment of an appropriate international tribunal to punish the culprits within the current Rwandan regime”.

“A regime accused of such atrocities has no longer any moral legitimacy to run a country,” the group said in a statement today.

The UN report released on Friday accused Rwandan forces of hunting down refugees in the eastern DRC and killing them in what it said could possibly qualify as acts of genocide.

“We call upon the UN to act on the report as a matter of urgency and ensure that a judicial mechanism is put in place. Otherwise, the UN will be betraying its mandate,” the party said.

Kigali has categorically rejected the document and Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said it was “manipulated from the start by some individuals and organisations intending to blame the killings on all Rwandans”.
