SA TV station raises funds for Haiti

2010-01-28 12:07

SOUTH Africa’s state broadcaster devoted this morning to a

telethon for Haiti.

Anchors on SABC’s “Morning Live” news and public affairs program

wore the yellow and green shirts of the national football team with the slogan

“help rebuild Haiti.”

Celebrities in the same shirts answered phones behind the anchors

during the 6-8 am programme, taking pledges from around the country.

Viewers were encouraged to make pledges by phone or mobile phone

text, and to make deposits into an account set up at a South African bank.

Susan van der Merwe, deputy minister of the department of

international relations and cooperation, also took calls.

She says her department will work with SABC to ensure the donations

reach the needy in Haiti.
