SA aims to double number of artisans – Nzimande

2010-01-14 09:32

THE Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande

said his department was working hard to increase the number of qualified

artisans across the country.

Nzimande was addressing a media briefing at the University of

Johannesburg’s Kingsway Campus.

Flanked by the director general in the department of higher

education and training Professor Mary Metcalfe, Nzimande said his department

aimed to double the current figure of qualified artisans a year.

Currently, there are 5 600 artisans produced a year.

“We have a target to produce at least 12 500 artisans per annum,”

he said.

Elizabeth Thobejane from the department of Higher Learning and

Training said they were confident that their target would be reached. She added

that plans were under way to reach the number.

“We are in the process of establishing a national artisan

moderating body that will be aimed at increasing the testing centres across the

country,” she said. Thobejane said that further education and training

institutions would also play a bigger role in assisting the department to

achieve its target.

Nzimande also said his department was in consultation with the

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to assist needy students who

performed well in matric. “We remain committed to providing financial assistance

through NSFAS to the most financially needy students,” he said.
