SA donates R1m to Haiti

2010-11-24 09:09

Deputy International Relations and Co-operation Minister Marius Fransman will hand over a R1 million cheque for Haiti to the World Health Organisation today.

“This responds to the call made by the United Nations on 12 November 2010 that a total of US 164 million is sought to improve water and sanitation services in Haiti,” the department said in a statement.

A catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti in January, killing 250 000 people on the poverty-stricken island between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

Now it is grappling with a spiralling cholera epidemic which has already killed 1 415 people among more than 56 000 cases.
