SA fans score big as Fifa slashes tickets prices

2010-02-20 08:59

FIFA has cut the prices of at least 30 percent of the World Cup

tickets in Category 2 and 3, the Saturday Star has reported.

The tickets, which cost up to R840, will now be sold to South

Africans for only R140.

The discounted tickets can be bought on-line at or at

participating FNB branches or by calling 083 123 2010.

Fifa said the majority of the tickets will be “re-categorised” to

ensure full stadiums.

The number of Category 4 tickets, regarded as the cheapest and

reserved exclusively for South Africans will be increased.

This meant that South Africans who already bought tickets to ensure

the best seats for matches just had their Category 2 and 3 tickets devalued by

Fifa also admitted the projected inflow of tourists coming to the

World Cup was also much less than expected.

Fifa general secretary Jérôme Valcke told a British newspaper this

week that the slashing of prices would cut Fifa’s income, but that the

organising budget had already been met.

Valcke said while Fifa was happy with the 2.1 million tickets

already sold, the body was trying to ensure that 20 percent of the tickets went

to South Africans.

“We cannot have a situation where the World Cup is in South Africa

and people cannot see matches,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.
