SA joins biodiversity conference

A South African delegation at a biodiversity conference in Japan intends to back Africa’s call for the equitable sharing of benefits flowing from the use of genetic resources and traditional knowledge.

It felt that a protocol to realise this goal had not been effectively implemented, the department of environment affairs said today.

“South Africa will strive to ensure that the biodiversity response to the climate change crisis is effective and that all political and financial implications are taken into account before the final decisions are taken.”

The delegation, comprising environment experts, conservation authorities, and government officials, was attending the Convention on Biological Diversity which started in Nagoya today. It would end on October 29.

Environment Minister Buyelwa Sonjica and deputy Rejoice Mabudafhasi were expected to join the conference soon.

“South Africa will advance positions that support a move towards implementation of economic instruments, including where appropriate, market-based mechanisms for biodiversity conservation,” it said.

The conference aimed to promote conservation, sustainable use of biological diversity, and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilisation of resources.
