A South African man was one of four people arrested in the Caribbean when 1.1 tons of cocaine was found aboard their yacht.

French Caribbean News reported on its website today that the yacht had been sailing from the Caribbean to Europe with an estimated $61 million (about R408 million) worth of drugs, the German federal criminal police told the publication.

The South African was arrested yesterday. He was to have skippered the 13m boat across the Atlantic.

A Dutchman and two Germans were also arrested.

The yacht was intercepted by French customs officials near the Caribbean island of St Maarten on Saturday, according to the website.
