SA needs professional women’s league – Banyana striker

2012-07-04 07:09

South Africa needs a professional women’s league, Banyana veteran striker Portia Modise said as the team put the finishing touches to its preparations for the London Olympic Games.

The Games will be a learning experience for the team, ranked 61, Modise said, as it had never participated in the Olympics or the World Cup.

“We are a very confident team right now. But realistically we haven’t been part of a huge tournament like the Olympics or World Cup. Unlike our opponents, they’re far more experienced.

“We will go there to get international experience. We will do our best. I know expectations are high but this is a young team,” Modise said.

Despite the absence of a professional women’s league, the South African team has been preparing for the Games since last year. It will wrap up its training programme in Germany this month.

While Modise said the South African Football Association (Safa) had allowed them to develop as a team, she believed the players would show better progress in a professional league structure where they had to fight for starting positions in weekly games.

“We do need a professional league so that players can grow. The Olympics will give us an indication of where we are. And we should also build from there and retain the players because age is still on their side,” she said.

She added: “Safa has done everything they could to make sure that we get ready for the bid stage.”

Banyana will compete in Group F against Sweden (no. 5 in the world) in Coventry on July 25, Canada (no. 7 in the world) in Coventry on July 27 and Japan (3) in Cardiff on July 31.
