SA numerical wind atlas launched

2012-03-13 13:54

An atlas with verified wind data for the Northern, Western and Eastern Cape was released by the energy department today.

When used with commercial wind resource software, this data could be used to determine the viability of a wind farm in these areas.

Data was collected over a year using 10 masts.

Deputy Minister Barbara Thompson said the R22 million atlas project was an acknowledgement of the potential of renewable energy.

“It’s our quest to ensure energy security for this country,” she told reporters in Cape Town.

“Within three to six months of operation, a wind turbine is able to offset all emissions caused by its construction, and can run virtually carbon-free for the remainder of its 20-year life.”

She encouraged green economy investment, which would not only yield profit, but also create jobs in the manufacturing of turbines.

The online data was available to the public from Tuesday at no cost, she said.
