2012-11-03 12:45

The South African rowing team which took the world by storm, winning a gold medal at this year’s London Olympics, has won a prestigious award from the World Rowing Federation.

The quartet, comprising James Thompson, Matthew Brittain, John Smith and Sizwe Ndlovu, has been named the World Rowing Awards winners for 2012.

This after they made history, becoming the first African rowing team to win a gold medal in the Olympics.

Sizwe Ndlovu, the most experienced among the four, became the only black rower to have won an Olympic gold.

In the London feast, the South African rowers outsprinted the potent Danish squad, the Australian world champions and the highly rated British team.

In their first-ever participation in the Olympics, the foursome resisted stage fright in front of some 25 000 screaming spectators at the Eton Dorney Olympic rowing course to snatch the win.
