SA spends R1m on Cuban office furniture for soldier

Furniture for South Africa’s one-man defence office in Cuba will cost the taxpayer nearly R1 million, Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said in a parliamentary reply.

Overall, the new SA National Defence Force office in Cuba costs about R3.4 million to set up.

Sisulu provided details of the office’s cost in a parliamentary reply to Democratic Alliance MP Dirk Stubbe.

The costs include over R1.6 million in operating expenses, a foreign service dispensation of R800 000 and R950 000 for office furniture.

The country’s new military attaché to Cuba is Colonel TJ Majola, according to Sisulu.

Majola has no support staff.

The international relations and co-operation department will rent his accommodation for R43 711 a month and Majola will use a Toyota Fortuner, worth over R312 000.

His task is to “strengthen the relationships between the South African and Cuba military with regard to defence industry, military medical co-operation and training”.

Stubbe was unable to comment, saying he had not seen Sisulu’s reply because of Parliament’s recess.

Sisulu’s spokesperson, Ndivhuwo Mabaya, could not be reached for comment.
