Doha – South African operatives accused Israel of pursing “destructive policies” in Africa, according to secret spy documents leaked to news organisation Al Jazeera.

In the latest revelation of the spy cables a deep disdain by SA spies for the Israeli counterparts has been exposed.

On Monday Al Jazeera announced that it was in possession of leaked documents from SSA operatives showing how South Africa became vulnerable to foreign espionage after the end of apartheid.

The cables, obtained by the news organisation, span a period from 2006 to the end of 2014, and include detailed briefings and analyses written by the operatives.

According to the “Geopolitical Country and Intelligence Assessment” of October 2009, it states that one of the policies pursued by Israel was the acquiring of African mineral wealth.

SA spies alleged that Israel planned to appropriate African diamonds as well as uranium, thorium and other radioactive elements used to manufacture nuclear fuel.

In an earlier report Israel was also linked to the theft of South African missile technology.

Other polices revealed by the cables include: compromising of Egypt’s water security, working assiduously to encircle and isolate Sudan from the outside and instrumental in arming some African regimes and allegedly aggravating crises among others, including Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea and South Africa.

A 2009 tour by the Israeli foreign minister was also dismissed by SA intelligence as an exercise in cynicism.

According to a secret analyses, it claimed that Avigdor Liberman’s nine-day trip to Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Kenya, which “hid” behind a philanthropic façade, laid the groundwork for arms deals and the appropriation of African resources.

Al Jazeera reported that Israel has long maintained ties with African countries based on its own security and diplomatic needs.

The Geopolitical Country and Intelligence Assessment states that Israel’s military, security, economic and political tentacles have reached every part of Africa behind a philanthropic façade.

The report states that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was launching a diplomatic offensive to win friends in Africa.
