SA vessel makes final voyage

2012-04-12 13:52

South Africa’s polar research and supply vessel the SA Agulhas sailed from the Cape Town harbour today on its final voyage.

It takes 21 members of the over-wintering team to Marion Island on the south Indian Ocean.

People flocked to the east pier of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront to bid the boat farewell.

In typical local style, adults and children enjoyed the sunny day while eating boerewors rolls and chatting about their fond memories of the ship.

The wintering team boarded at 1pm, but was likely to leave only at 2.30pm, depending on immigrations and customs.

The SA Agulhas will be replaced by the modern SA Agulhas II, which arrives from Finland in early May.
