SABC Board: the full short list

2013-08-15 14:23

Facing a tight deadline before the six-month term of the SABC’s interim board expires next month, 37 candidates have been short-listed to serve as nonexecutive directors on the next permanent board at the public broadcaster.

The previous board was dissolved after a string of resignations.

Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications yesterday announced it had short-listed 37 candidates out of 147 nominations from political parties, the public and the TV industry.

The list has elicited no strong criticism and is broadly representative. It includes several quality candidates despite fears that a position on the board is fraught and often impacts negatively on a board member’s career.

The list includes former board members – Lumko Mtimde and Claire O’Neil – and several members of the current interim board – Ellen Zandile Tshabalala, Noluthando Gosa, Ronnie Lubisi and Vusumuzi Mavuso.

In between the former SABC employees (Charlotte Mampane and Hope Zinde) and politicians (Connie Seoposengwe and Darkey Ephraim Africa), there are legal experts (Zola Majavu and Krish Naidoo), journalists/commentators (William Gumede and John Mattison) and civil society leaders (Kate Skinner from the Save Our SABC coalition).

There are also nominations from business (Bongani Khumalo and Thembinkosi Bonakele), academia (Johannes Jacobus Rossouw) and the music industry (Lazarus Serobe), along with accounting and language experts.

Up against the clock with numerous clearances and protocols to be observed, Parliament will interview candidates from Tuesday to Friday next week.

City Press will be profiling the candidates and covering the interviews as they happen.
