SABC cans Generations as fired actors take Vundla to court

2014-09-19 17:13

It’s lights out for South Africa’s most loved soapie as producers and actors are set to battle it out in the court room.

“From Wednesday the 1st of October 2014, Generations will be off screen until December as new episodes are filmed. In place of Generations in the 20:00 time slot, SABC 1 drama Skeem Saam Season 3 will be broadcast,” said the SABC earlier today.

The announcement came just minutes after the 16 dismissed actors revealed that they had filed legal papers to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for re-instatement.

The actors said of their decision: “Throughout this process, we have engaged with our former employer and been clear about the fact that we are open to negotiation and discussions – but we’re resolute in our commitment to transforming unfair industry practices.”

Show creator Mfundi Vundla refused to comment on the matter when questions regarding the saga were posed to him.

“[We] would like to appeal to the public to be patient as we deal with the challenges currently faced in ensuring the longevity of Generations,” said the SABC.

The public broadcaster said the hiatus would give the show’s producers a chance to “revamp” the popular soapie after the show’s 16 principal actors were dismissed by MMSV Productions.
