SA’s last medal hope on track

2012-08-11 08:17

Caster Semenya will line up in the 800m final tonight (9pm SA time) as South Africa’s last medal hope on the track.

This after all the other favourites, Sunette Viljoen (javelin), Khotso Mokoena (long jump) and LJ van Zyl (400m hurdles) came short of success in their respective events.

Only Van Zyl had failed to go beyond the first round.

But Semenya looked in good shape when she stormed home in a season best 1:57.67 during the semifinals earlier this week.

The 21-year-old will face Kenyan favourites Pamela Jelimo and Janeth Jepkosgei tonight.

“It’s going to be tough but I’m going to do my best,” she said after the semifinals.

The 21-year-old said of her competitors: “If you want to run a good run race, forget everybody as this will take your mind off and think about your race.”

The 4x400m team could not make use of the advantage of being reinstated in the final as they finished 7th last night.

The quartet of Shaun de Jager, Willie de Beer, LJ van Zyl and Oscar Pistorius came last in 3:03.46.

The time was still a season best for the team.

The Bahamas took gold in a national record time (NR) of 2:56.72, USA (silver, 2:57.05 SB) and Trinidad & Tobago (bronze, 2:59.40 NR).
