SIU: Land reform investigation

2011-12-03 12:42

Thirty-six cases of fraud, corruption, financial irregularities and maladministration are under investigation at the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.

The major focus is on R300 million worth of grants provided under the government’s land reform programme. To date, the investigations by the SIU have led to the arrest of a prominent businessman and three departmental officials in KwaZulu-Natal.

Their case, which is currently before court, has led to the forfeiture of three farms valued at about R51 million, which are regarded as the proceeds of crime. The investigation – which is due to run until 2014 – involves 35 SIU staff members and includes the biggest data collection exercise in the unit’s history.

More than four million documents are being scanned to safeguard evidence for current and future investigations, including affidavits from more than 500 individuals.

The SIU has also created a centralised database to identify individuals engaged in improprieties on a national basis.
