SIU: North West investigation

2011-12-03 12:55

Fifty-five procurement contracts worth more than R300?million are being investigated in 24 municipalities in
the province.

The SIU has already identified irregularities in the awarding of a number of tenders, and is investigating about 600 cases of municipal officials who are conducting business with their municipalities without declaring their business interests.

More than R12 million has been recovered through the unit’s investigation, and acknowledgements of debts – where individuals repay government funds which they have wrongly received – have resulted in the repayment of an additional R13?million.

About 60 officials face disciplinary action as a result of the probes, and five criminal cases have been referred to the SA Police Service.

A number of recommendations for corrective action – particularly around the local government procurement processes – have been made to the provincial government, and more are likely to be made before the investigation is completed in 2013.
