SIU: Public Works investigation

2011-12-03 13:02

The procurement division in the public works department has been under investigation by the SIU for almost two years.

The focus has specifically been on concerns with leases, capital projects and the “prestige portfolio”, which relates to services at ministerial residences.

Contracts with a total value of R3.3 billion are already under investigation, although the unit expects the figure to increase significantly as the probe continues.

More than 40 problematic leases are under investigation, as well as 10 capital expenditure projects.

A number of departmental officials are also under investigation for potential conflicts of interest and having interests in companies that trade with the department.

Criminal charges are being processed in several cases, and the Asset Forfeiture Unit will be asked to help.

The SIU is also reviewing the department’s procurement processes and systems, to ensure systemic gaps which aid corrupt and fraudulent behaviour are closed.
