Sadtu faction: We demand to know why our president is not here

2013-10-25 11:37

The national general council of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) got off to a rocky start at the Premier Hotel in Kempton Park this morning.

Two provinces – the Eastern Cape and North West – wasted no time in demanding to know why Thobile Ntola, the union’s president, was not at the conference.

Sadtu suspended Ntola last month after he had allowed suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi to speak during a meeting organised by the union in the Eastern Cape.

This morning, a delegate from the Eastern Cape stood up and said: “We demand to know why the president is not here. Was he notified and invited to the meeting according to procedure?”

The Eastern Cape supports Ntola, who is also from that province.

Ntola is a friend of Vavi and supports the call for Cosatu to hold a special congress to decide Vavi’s future.

Other provinces raised points of order, opposing the Eastern Cape, saying Ntola could not attend the conference as he was suspended.

Shortly afterwards, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape delegates sang different songs at the same time.
