Safa boss Oliphant pays tribute to Baartjies

2009-09-03 15:50

THE South African Football Association (Safa) president Molefi

Oliphant has paid a special tribute to a friend and fellow football

administrator Vincent Baartjes, who passed away today in Cape Town after a

long illness.

Baartjes was the honorary life member of Safa and he also served in

the Finance Committee and the Remunerations Committee of the association.

Oliphant, who is in Egypt on Caf assignment, described Baartjes as

the pioneer of football unity in South Africa. “On behalf of the Football Family

in the country, and on behalf of COSAFA, an organisation that Vincent served in

the Finance Committee, I convey our deepest condolences to the Baartjes family,”

said Oliphant.

He said football lost a great stalwart in Vincent Baartjes.

“For what you see in a form of Safa was singularly initiated by a

telephone call way back in 1989 by him, to the Secretary of the South African

Soccer Association (SASA) Solomon Stix Morewa. The call was to initiate talks

about the unification of football in the country as at the time Vincent was the

Secretary General of the South African Soccer Federation (SASF).

“He is one of the unsung heroes of the development of football in

South Africa and we are grateful for his contribution to football. It was

befitting for the association to honour him with a Presidential Award at the

inaugural Safa Awards last year.”

Oliphant said Baartjes would be sadly missed by all football

fraternity and said his memories would live forever.
