Safa boss wants discussion on ticket prices

2010-07-20 14:30

Filling up the new soccer stadiums by selling “cheap” tickets will

create “problems” in the future, SA Football Association (Safa) chief executive

Leslie Sedibe told MPs today.

Sedibe said: “If there is going to be an aggressive strategy to

maximise returns in the short term, we are going to run into problems. It is

nice to tell people we filled up a stadium, but how much do we charge.

“What is the cost of hiring the stadium? Over R500 000. What is the

cost of security? If we are going to charge R40 and R20 for a PSL (Premier

Soccer League) game, there is something wrong with the economy.

“People need to understand it is nice to fill up stadiums but we

will have to revisit these issues around ticket prices if we are serious about

development because that is where the money is going to come from.”

Congress of the People MP Graham Mackenzie said Safa would have to

work with cricket and rugby authorities to ensure the stadiums did not become

“white elephants”.

He said: “I recommend that Safa engage rugby and cricket to ensure

we do not have white elephants. We have magnificent stadiums and at the moment

they are ranked number one in the world.

“If we engaged other sports, we can ensure we don’t have a legacy

of white elephants. That indaba should take place immediately.”
