Safa settles to retain Bafana name

2011-06-24 10:37

For R5 million, South African Football Association (Safa) have retained the rights to the name Bafana Bafana from Stanton Woodrush (Pty) Limited.

Prior to the settlement, the latter held a trade mark registration 93/0581 for word mark Bafana Bafana.

That meant Stanton Woodrush had the exclusive rights to the name since 1993.

The settlement was reached by the two parties two days ago.

And this was announced today by the association’s top brass during a press conference at the Safa House.

“It is now history that Stanton Woodrush (Pty) Limited) owned the Bafana (Bafana) name,” said Danny Jordaan who chaired the ad-hoc committee that was tasked with looking for a new name or settle with Woodrush.

“Bafana is now exclusively owned by Safa in an exchange of R5 million to be paid over 12 months.”

Safa had twice lost the legal battle in a bid to have the exclusive rights to the word mark Bafana Bafana.
