Salary bonus for teachers

2009-11-26 07:17

Teachers across the country are in for a very merry Christmas with

the news that the basic education department will finally pay them the monies

due to them.

After months of waiting, teachers will finally receive their

occupation specific dispensation (OSD) in full.

The department announced that the full agreement was to be

implemented in the current financial year and not next year as was promised last

Department spokesperson Granville Whittle said the OSD payments

would be backdated to July 1.

A 3% pay progression in recognition of experience will be paid to

teachers on December 18, and it will include an additional once-off 3% payment

for senior and master teachers.

Whittle said that on Christmas eve all teachers would receive a

supplementary pay upgrade.

“These payments are over and above the general cost of living

adjustment of between 10% and 13 % that educators received on July 1,” Whittle

The SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) said labour never gave up

the fight for the payment to be made this year instead of in April 2010.

Describing the latest offer, Sadtu general secretary Mugwena

Maluleke said their members’ patience had been rewarded.
