Rapper Cassper Nyovest, whose real name is Refiloe Phoolo is dominating the SA Music Awards (Samas) with five nominations.

But it seems this time around the competition is going to be tough for Phoolo.

He will go head to head with rapper K.O and Beatenberg, who also lead the nominations.

Phoolo has been nominated for best male artist, best newcomer, best rap album for Tsholofelo, best album and best collaboration with Okmalumkoolkat.

It seems this is Phoolo’s year.

Simphiwe Dana has two nominations, for best African adult album and best female artist of the year. Bucie Nqwiliso has also been nominated for best female artist of the year. We hope Nqwiliso will take something home – it’s long overdue.

This year, the contents of the 150 goodie bags are not as covetable as they once were. Included are ToePorn socks, Twisp e-cigarettes, a John Craig wallet, Cipo & Baxx T-shirt, hair products, Pamela Mann leggings, make-up by Iman, Rocka earphones and caps, Miglio Designer Swarovski jewellery and Ray-Ban sunglasses.

These exclusive goodie bags will be handed out to the onstage presenters and live performers on the day of the awards.

“We have 150 goodie bags which consist of a wide variety of products and vouchers to be redeemed for various services from our sponsors. All these items, in the 150 bags, have a collective value of R2?million,” said Sama spokesperson Mika Chauke.

This year’s key Sama sponsors are North West department of tourism, the department of arts and culture, the Recording Industry of SA, Kia Motors, Amstel and the SABC.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Sun City Superbowl, which will be broadcast live on SABC1 at 8pm on April 19.
