A bomb scare in Sandton has disrupted the Gautrain bus service because of road closures around the station.

The bomb scare at the Alexander Forbes building on West Street saw more than a hundred people gathered on Rivonia Road earlier today. They had been told to await further instructions from police after evacuating buildings in the vicinity.

“We were told to evacuate ... as quickly and as calmly as possible,” said Tshidi Molala, who spoke as she stood among the crowd.

Molala was attending a seminar at Ernst & Young when the scheduled programme was disrupted. “We were told there was a bomb scare at the Alexander Forbes building near us,” she said.

Sandton police spokesperson Captain Kym Cloete confirmed that police had been called to the Alexander Forbes building following a bomb report.

A dog unit was sent out to the building at about 10.30am to search for any possible explosives.

“At the moment the matter is under control and police are still on the scene,” said Cloete.

Subsequently, roads in the surrounding area were closed.

An advisory on the Gautrain website read: “The Sandton Bus Service will not be in operation until further notice due to the closure of roads around the Sandton Station. We will advise once the bus service is up and running again.”

Cloete said they hoped the matter would be resolved in next few hours.
