Sanral to repay e-tag charges

2011-12-23 09:32

The SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) was contacting customers to reverse administration charges deducted erroneously from e-tag accounts this week.

“The charges that have occurred were levied erroneously. This is a result of failure to deactivate them now and reactivating those once tolling starts. We have now deactivated the charges,” Sanral said.

Account registration began on November 7 with registered users depositing R50 into their accounts to create an initial balance with tolling only beginning in February.

“For those customers who elected to have their statements posted, the specified service fee is R5. The existence of these charges [are] in the terms and conditions, available at point of purchase for e-tags and e-toll website,” Sanral said.

The Democratic Alliance’s Gauteng caucus leader Jack Bloom said that Sanral must disclose all administration costs of the e-toll system.

“These extra costs are another example of Sanral’s high-handed implementation of the controversial tolls,” said Bloom.

He reiterated the DA’s call for a boycott of the e-toll system and the scrapping of the project entirely.
