Santana reveals squad, excludes Benni

2009-10-02 06:26

EMBATTLED Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana has once again left

leading goalscorer Benni McCarthy and defender Nasief Morris from the team

expected to do battle with Norway and Iceland next week.

It was widely expected that Santana would recall the Blackburn

Rovers’ striker but again the Brazilian mentor has kept faith in the majority of

the team that has lost six preparatory matches in a row.

Santana is under pressure to deliver positive results after a

string of poor performances and defeats against Norway and Iceland could signal

the end of his tenure.

With the new SA Football Association leadership, under president

Kirsten Nematandani, reading the riot act to Santana to start winning matches,

the Brazilian would be hoping for a better outing than the previous one in

Germany and the Republic of Ireland.

The squad

Siboniso Gaxa, Morgan Gould (both SuperSport), Siyabonga Sangweni (Golden

Arrows), Lucas Thwala (Pirates), Bevan Fransman (Maccabi Netanya, Israel), Tsepo

Masilela (Maccabi Haifa, Israel), Aaron Mokoena (Portsmouth, England), Anele

Ngongca (KRC Genk, Belgium)

Midfielders: Kagisho Dikgacoi

(Fulham United, England), Steven Pienaar (Everton, England), Elrio van Heerden

(Blackburn Rovers, England), Macbeth Sibaya (Rubin Kazan, Russia), Benson

Mhlongo, Teko Modise (both Pirates), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs)

Strikers: Mabhuti Khenyeza, Katlego Mphela (both Sundowns), Richard

Henyekane (Arrows), Sthembiso Ngcobo (Free State Stars), Bernard Parker (FC

Twente, Netherlands)
