DA leader Helen Zille has accused Sasco students of trying to disrupt a lecture at the University of Fort Hare, in the Eastern Cape, where she was to speak.

“Sasco [SA Students’ Congress] students tried to prevent DASO [Democratic Alliance Students’ Organisation] using the venue, and then sought to disrupt [the lecture] once it had started,” Zille said yesterday in a statement.

“When the lights went off, Daso students gathered outside the venue as Sasco members hurled insults.”

Sasco could not be reached for comment last night.

Zille said it was a “tragedy” that the university was the venue for “such intolerance and anti-democratic behaviour”.

“It brings shame to the institution and sullies the legacy of people who devoted their lives for freedom,” she said.

“It was very encouraging to see the Daso students stand firm, and refuse to be intimidated.”
