Sascoc and Durban net Olympic award

2011-07-09 15:04

The SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) and the city of Durban were jointly awarded the Olympic Cup today.

“It’s humbling to receive recognition from both the IOC [International Olympic Committee] and the IOC President himself. It is a great feeling, a real milestone and an achievement for everyone involved,” said Sascoc chief executive Tubby Reddy in a statement.

The award is presented by the IOC annually to associations with a record of merit and integrity in developing the Olympic movement.

Sascoc president Gideon Sam said the committee was happy to receive the award and to share it with the city of Durban as it played a role in the success of the week long 123rd IOC Session.

The IOC session started on July 4 and ended today.

Singapore, which hosted the inaugural Youth Olympics, last year, was the last recipient of the Olympic Cup.
