2012-06-20 13:04

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) today announced a 62-member team for the Paralympic Games in London.

The event runs from August 29 until September 9, which is just two weeks after the Olympics, also hosted by the United Kingdom.
Sprinter Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorius and javelin thrower Zanele Situ are among the accomplished para athletes who will spearhead the team’s hunt for glory in London.

The team is made up of track, cycling, equestrian, rowing, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis athletes.
Track and field has the highest representation with 25 athletes selected.

A group of 66 athletes won 30 medals at the Beijing Games in China four years ago.

Sascoc president Gideon Sam said the team’s success in 2008 was “the high standard of excellence we have come to expect from our Paralympic team”.

Pistorius and his teammates won 21 gold medals at the last Paralympics.

Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula announced the government has set up “eKhaya Centre” in London to make Team SA feel “at home away from home”.

The team’s opening ceremony clothing was also unveiled at the Olympic House in Houghton, Johannesburg today.
