Sascoc’s R33m road to London

2012-02-16 12:39

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) has invested over R33 million in the preparation for this year’s Olympics and Paralympics Games.

The Olympic governing body said it was “all systems go” in the countdown to the two global events to be held in London later this year.

So far a few individuals and teams have qualified for the Olympics while the International Paralympic Commission is yet to decide slots for Paralympians.

Sascoc general manager for high performance Ezera Tshabangu said 30 athletes have qualified for the Olympics.

“The list is made of five different sporting codes – women’s football (Banyana Banyana), athletics, rowing, canoeing and road cycling,” Tshabangu said during a media briefing at the Olympic House today.

“The investment to date is R33 877 402.71 since the start of the current Olympic cycle.”

But Sascoc said the money was still not enough as they intend to source additional funding for the remaining Olympic qualifying events and training camps.

More than 100 athletes represented the country at the previous Olympics.

The first Olympic team announcement will be made on June 7 with the final batch to be made known on July 4.

The London Games run from July 27 to August 12 while the Paralympics will follow from August 29 to September 9.
