Satawu rejects Prasa’s final offer

The Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) has made its final offer to

end a strike which has shut down rail services across the country, the SA

Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) said today.

“Management said it was the last offer that would be made so we are

going to convey that to the members,” said Satawu national sector co-ordinator

Tinzi Lubabalo.

Prasa’s final offer was a 10% wage increase.

“Our members are refusing the 10% across the board. They say the

employer must come up with 13%,” said Lubabalo.

He said Satawu’s leadership and negotiators would spend the weekend

consulting with its members.

While they would not endorse an offer the members had already

rejected, Lubabalo said members had to be informed that Prasa’s most recent

offer would be its final one.

Satawu and the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu)

began a strike on Monday that saw services shut down at Metrorail, Shosholoza

Meyl and Autopax bus services across the country.

Utatu general secretary Chris de Vos said his union’s members had

agreed to accept the 10% offer.

“We believe it is a good offer,” said De Vos.

De Vos added that it was clear Prasa would not be improving its

“[Prasa group CEO Tshepo Lucky] Montana gave a clear indication

that his team were not coming back to the table,” he said.

De Vos said unions were also feeling sympathy for the thousands of

passengers who were dependent on Metrorail services.

“Your heart bleeds for them.”
