Sayonara, Simon!

2011-04-15 12:32

Thankfully, this week’s Survivor was pretty straightforward... and although he took Tejan on at tribal council, it was still poor Simon’s fire which was extinguished. When will it be schemer Tejan’s turn?

1. How do you feel about being voted off?
Absolutely devastated! I was really gutted… having dealt with the trials and tribulations that came with the tiny barren “island” of Goma, and then losing a couple of tribe members to circumstances beyond our control, we four remaining Goma members felt like we had reached the “promised land” when we merged and moved to the island of plenty.

For the first time in a while I took a deep breath, looked around and was awed by my surroundings.

But the game is a cruel beast and before I could smell the roses, I found myself at tribal council in a situation that predetermined my fate.

2. Did you expect it?
Yes, of course I did, but I didn’t want to go! As soon as we merged, we were immediately at a disadvantage by not having the numbers. I had hoped that we might convert one of the Raithun members, specifically Malusi, and it came close to fruition, but in the end I think he decided on “better the devil you know”.

3. Why do you think you were voted off?
It was bound to be one of the Goma members and because I was perceived as being the “glue” in Goma, taking me out was the right strategy to fracture the alliance. It was really a no-brainer.

4. Why did you enter Survivor?
Because first and foremost, I believed I could win. Secondly, I live such a structured and corporate life that the idea of taking myself out of my comfort zone was appealing and I reckoned it would do me good.

5. Were your expectations of the game met?
Personally, I had expected to get further, so no, my ambition was not achieved. The experience itself was priceless and I felt extremely privileged to be part of Survivor: Maldives.

6. What surprised you the most about playing the game?
I was surprised how easily I dealt with the elements and actually enjoyed sleeping with the stars as my roof. I was extremely wary of how I would react to the great outdoors, having lived most of my life with most comforts and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I actually could be an outdoors guy!

7. At what point did you feel strategy came into play?
For me it happened pretty quickly. We lost the first immunity challenge and had to make a decision on who to vote out. I had to go against my better judgment and vote Lukhanya out because most of the “plebs” felt he needed to go. To not vote him out would have put me in a dangerous minority.

8. What was the most difficult part of playing the game?
Definitely having to vote someone out. I am naturally gregarious and got along with most if not all of my tribe mates. Having to vote out Vanessa was pretty hard because I liked her and believed she added value to the tribe. Unfortunately she rubbed some others up the wrong way.

9. Looking back, would you change the way you played the game?
Of course, if you are not the Ultimate Survivor, you erred somewhere along the way. But it’s not all strategy. Luck or lack of luck plays a great part in your journey.

10. What are your plans now?
I looked at my Survivor experience as my last great adventure before I settle down and start a family. So, I’m looking forward to marrying my beautiful fiancée and starting a family.

11. What have you learnt about yourself?
I learnt that the limitations I placed on myself exist in my mind. I learnt that the human body is an incredible miracle of creation and that we can do so much more than imagined.

12. Would you enter again?
In a heartbeat! I feel like the game and I have unfinished business.
