Scene City: Beach party and meeting our ‘supreme women’ set the tone

I’m such a jet-setter lately. Last week, fresh from my trip to LA for the Grammys, I flew to Cape Town for a relaxing time by the sea – as one does.

It was the weekend of the Hunter’s Dry Oasis Tour held at the Lagoon Beach hotel in Milnerton and since I still had a little partying energy left, I decided to spend the rest of it with “my chinas” (popular word at that event).

From Friday, the whole hotel was booked out for the music festival featuring rapper JR, Gangs of Instrumentals, Kuli Chana, MiCasa, AKA and Jack Parow with DJs Vigilante, Poppy Ntshongwana and Roger Goode on the decks.

The dress code was beach wear, which suited me just fine because I wasn’t really up to making too much of an effort.

Plus the Cape Town weather was beyond lovely and perfect for hunks to go topless.

Main “china” Thapelo Mokoena, of the beverage advert fame, was there with fiancée Lesego-Tshepang Sedumedi. Yep, he’s officially off the market.

But taken or not, Mokoena still provided eye candy alongside the delectable AKA and the ever-so-charming Kuli Chana. J-Something was mobbed by female fans as soon as he stepped off the stage.

I had a catch-up session with Tumi “Lady Naturelle” Masemola who featured in the advert. She looked content, although she admitted to missing her two children.

It does help that her boyfriend Mandla Ngcongwane is in the same band.

While my aim was not to sweat, I found myself touching the floor with my dodgy dance moves halfway through the night. Thank goodness that none of you were there to witness that.

The rest of the week was uneventful until Thursday afternoon when I went over to Emoyeni Conference centre in Parktown, Johannesburg, for a spot of late lunch and to meet some of the new Estée Lauder Supreme Women, chosen for being “supreme in their respective fields”.

Turns out one of them is City Press editor-in-chief Ferial Haffajee. Others there were businesswoman Ipeleng Mkhari, CNBC’s Alicia Seckam, Jacaranda FM’s newscast editor Dianne Broodryk, singers Zonke Dikana and Louise Carver, Expresso’s Liezel van der Westhuizen, Kass Naidoo and singer/actress Lucia Mthiyane.

Mthiyane serenaded the guests while they sipped on French champagne and feasted on oysters. Mkhari told me she was especially excited to be part of the project because she identifies with the company’s founder, its entrepreneurial spirit and legacy.

Naidoo, who looked gorgeous in a black bandage dress, was accompanied by her hubby lawyer Ryk Meiring and couldn’t stop gushing about their three-month-old baby girl.

“Every time I look at my kids, I just can’t believe that I did that. I brought two precious human beings into the world,” she said. Mind you, she lost her baby weight after a couple of weeks. Can’t deal with that.

It was a really lovely way to end my week – with women who inspire the country.
