Deena Naidoo launches his new restaurant, Aarya, at Sun Square in Montecasino

Iused to drool and go gaga over MasterChef South Africa winner Deena Naidoo’s creations when he was on the show.

And now I can finally brag that I indulged (quite heavily) in some of his yummy treats at the opening of his restaurant, Aarya, at Sun Square in Montecasino on Thursday night.

Hosted by Bonang Matheba, the event proved to be a huge hit with the celeb guests including Zuraida Jardine, Zwai and Melanie Bala, Gareth Cliff, Tamara Dey, Carmel Fischer, Whackhead Simpson, Sam Cowen, Joan Ramagoshi and Tumisho Masha.

I must say I think Isidingo actress Kgomotso and hubby Calvin Christ-oper are giving Jen Su a run for her title as “envelope openers” because lately they are anywhere and everywhere. A little home time guys?

It was so cute seeing Naidoo and his 10-year-old daughter take to the stage as the restaurant was named after her.

“The name captures how I treat and present my passion for food. It is my philosophy. It’s from the ancient Sanskrit, which means to treat a woman with dignity, love and respect,” he explained.

The highlight of the event was the butter chicken – said to be Naidoo’s signature dish – served alongside a sample of other eats like pizzas, prawns, crème brûlée, curry and rice, all of which will be on the menu.

And how can I forget the divine spread of jams and cheeses, which I might have hogged because I was impressed with the huge variety.

Sadly it seems we might have to wait for another month to get to try Naidoo’s foods because I hear the restaurant is fully booked for the month.
