Just about all the celebs and the who’s who pitched for the nominee announcements

On Wednesday evening, an avalanche of celebrities turned the usually serene Summer Place in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, into a pumping party venue.

The occasion was the top five nominee announcement for the MetroFM Music Awards, due to take place in Durban on February 23.

Azania Maseko and William Lehong from the radio station had the unenviable task of addressing the loud audience whose attention span rivalled that of a gold fish.

Everyone was back in the swing of things with much excitement and air kissing going on.

Skwatta Kamp’s Shugasmakx seemed to be holding court in the foyer of the venue, and was talking non stop.

It later dawned that he’s getting married on Saturday and was probably accepting a never-ending stream of congratulations.

A new year certainly ushers in new beginnings, and one way for people to mark that is by re-inventing themselves.

A person whose make-over did not quite work has to be youth dance show presenter Noluthando Meje.

“Nolly”, as she’s known, is a very pretty girl and has rocked different trendy hairstyles before.

However, the home-made bald jobbie she’s now sporting is rather jarring.

Maybe I should pass on my hairstylist’s number to her. He’ll give her a chiskop that will make her the belle of the ball.

I bumped into the gorgeous Khanyi Mbau looking all Malibu Barbie with her blonde locks and size zero figure poured into a tight pinky-hued mini dress.

She completely transformed into mummy mode when she whipped out her phone to show me pictures of her daughter Khanu’s first day at “big school”.

“It was so emotional. But thank God, she’s stopped looking like Mandla (her father) now!” she joked.

And it’s true, that girl is the spitting image of her mother even with all the work she’s had done.

I have to say, the ladies took the dress code of glitz and glam literally.

There were so many bling embellishments and sequins, we could have constructed our own giant glitter ball right there.

The random girls were especially OTT, with one in studded and heel-less booties, others wore spiked accessories and almost all rocked stiletto platforms and tight tiny dresses. And we wonder how they get these supposed exclusive invites, neh?

Now, can we talk about this Dr Malinga guy?

Throughout the festive he’s had people in stitches with his odd flighty dance moves.

I still haven’t figured out whether we’ve been laughing with him or at him.

When I suggested to him that his legs should be insured supermodel-style, he threw back: “These joints are safe. They have vaseline inside, so they are nice and greased up.”

And then there was Toya Delazy and her posse of three girls.

Ladies, you are fierce enough with your hipster styling and middle-finger attitude.

Do try and smile every so often.

Those who had no trouble smiling were music/radio couples Zwai and Melanie Bala and Thomas and Unathi Msengana. They are just awesome.

DJ Tira was also flashing a Colgate smile and following the colour blocking trend that people just won’t let die!

Bricks was also in attendance.

The blonde streaks in his dreadlocks are gone but he looked like he was going to the nearest car wash.

We really should adhere to the theme.

Robert Marawa clearly enjoyed his Christmas as he hid the traces of that last carrot cake under a huge T-shirt, while AKA has an entire bottom row of teeth gold-plated to rival an American Swiss display cabinet.

If Wednesday evening was any indication, Durban is going to be HAWT! – Additional reporting by Sixoliwe Ndawo
