Scene City: High spirits and vodka

2012-10-20 12:06

The Joburg party season is now in full swing. The warm Thursday night weather saw the city’s party regulars come out to the launch of Grey Goose vodka’s Union Bar in Melrose Arch.

The stylishly decorated pop-up bar will be in operation at the shopping centre for eight weeks before moving off to other cities across the country.

Guests perched themselves on leather and velvet couches and chairs, while watching a graffiti artist do his thing
on one side of the wall.

Guests were served a selection of cocktails with kitsch names like 50 Shades of Grey Goose; Tin Mug Moscow Mule served in a silver tin mug; and my two favourites, the Red Velvet Martini and Cucumber & Kiwi G&T.

While the party was picking up, I spotted Simphiwe Dana passing by with her daughter Zazi. Back at the party,
I expected to see more Isidingo actors as the host for the evening, Leigh Hofmeyr, is the daughter of soapie creator Gray Hofmeyr.

Letoya Mangezi, a mother of three children all under six, is one sexy sangoma. The Isidingo actress looked pretty in a black and white dress with a bow shoulder detail.

I’m starting to believe that nobody can out-party Pallu’s Peta Eggierth-Symes. The woman has even started venturing to
parties outside Sandton.

At this rate, I half expect to spot her in Soweto.

I had a chat with Metro FM’s Naked DJ about his recent trip to New York, where he attended the opening of hip-hop mogul Jay-Z’s basketball team, the Brooklyn Nets. My jealousy knows no bounds.

Fashion designer Suzaan Heyns spent time at a corner table with friends while fellow designers Craig Jacobs of Fundudzi and Hangwani Nengovhela of Rubicon caught up with each other.

The two are hosting a trunk show next weekend in Rosebank, where Jacobs says there’ll be cocktails from 10am. This can only end badly for people’s bank accounts.

Rapper Amu walked in two hours after the party started with a mystery woman clad in red, while crooner Kabomo Vilakazi rolled solo.

The party heated up thanks to DJ Switch. The cocktails outlasted the guests.
