Scene City: Time for pampering

2012-12-09 10:00

Jozi’s jet set thronged Melrose Arch’s new salon to have their hair and nails perfected.

Just because most places shut down in Jozi during the festive season, it doesn’t mean we should be confronted with dodgy weaves and Naomi Campbell-like hairlines.

I found the perfect hair place that the weave brigade, dreadlocked folks and chiskop brothers can visit – Mane Hair Salon in Melrose Arch, which had its official opening on Thursday.

Owned by former True Love and O Magazine fashion and beauty journalist Thembeka Johnson, the opening was a surprisingly high-profile event.

And if the calibre of guests who attended in the middle of a Thursday afternoon are anything to go by, then this is where you’ll be able to network with the country’s movers and shakers too.

Guests included ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa and IT billionaire Robert Gumede, who brought his beautiful wife Portia (she had on the biggest ring I have ever seen. It’s dazzle was matched only by her smile).

It was also pleasant to see motivational speaker, etiquette expert and businesswoman Doris Msibi out and about.

Her candy-pink military-inspired jacket worked perfectly with her navy outfit. On point, lady.

There was a lot of mingling, nibbling and sipping.

Guests also made a beeline for the salon chairs and nail bar, where they enjoyed discounted hair treatments and manicures.

And, like them, I did the same and now have a fresh hairdo and nails. How fabulous!

I must admit, Johnson really inspired me with her statement on how she managed to move from being a journalist to being a businesswoman, which she said was “an extension” of her career.

The one thing that will definitely send me back is the stylists’ head rubs and massage chairs, which almost had me asleep from the relaxing pleasure.
