Scene City: True Love celebrates 40 years of glamour

Iconic magazine that celebrates the African woman sets tongues wagging at The Rand Club

Of all the guests who came to celebrate True Love magazine’s 40th anniversary on Wednesday night, Khanyi Mbau made the grandest and most memorable entrance.

The self-proclaimed queen of bling sauntered into The Rand Club in Johannesburg sporting a short, peroxide-blonde hairstyle, something of a shock after the usual weave we expect from the controversial socialite.

“This is part of my reinvention. If Madonna can do it, so can I,” said Mbau as she debuted her new look.

She’s obviously missed the spotlight because she basked in all the attention as she showed off her moves on the dance floor.

All the fashion types were there, with designers like David Tlale and his faux dreads adding some drama; Thula Sindi, who dressed one of the June cover girls Claire Mawisa in a long, flowing colourful skirt; and Paledi Segapo, who was seen exchanging pleasantries with DJ Cleo.

We doubt the DJ’s new signature tie style – which ends quarter of the way to his waist – will catch on as a trend.

The grand venue, which used to only admit men, was the perfect luxurious backdrop for such a glamorous event.

The elaborate staircase provided a dramatic walkway for anyone planning to show off their outfit, as demonstrated by the editor of the magazine, Lerato Tshabalala, as she walked down – resplendent in a long, silver-and-white gown – to welcome her guests while they were enjoying cocktails and canapes.

Aspiring media mogul Bonang Matheba was accompanied by her stylist, Nthato Mashishi, dressed in a long, one-shouldered lime-green dress with a beige, gold buckled belt.

The party moved upstairs, where mannequins decked in local designs formed part of the red-themed decor.

While some shrimp, polenta and beef finger foods were passed around, Tshabalala kept her speech short and sweet.

She also called on stage her June 2012 cover stars Zizo Beda, Mawisa and Judith Sephuma.

Mawisa quipped that the cover was really about Sephuma. “Zizo and I are just the extras. We’re the ‘others’,” joked Mawisa.

Guests were delighted when Mi Casa sang the birthday song before filling up the dance floor with their hits.

Kelly Khumalo looked in a good space post-Jub Jub, while veteran actress Lilian Dube was in high spirits. Siblings Kgomotso and Neo Matsunyane looked like the best of friends.

“Aren’t you glad he cut off his dreads though? Imagine a man his age with dreads,” Kgomotso teased her brother.

Actor Thapelo Mokoena was with his beautiful fiancée, Lesego Sedumedi. “True Love has always celebrated the African woman and that’s a beautiful thing,” said the charming thespian.

The MC was Kaya FM breakfast show host Bob Mabena, who doubled as the DJ, playing hits that took guests down memory lane.
