School shoot-out suspect may be linked to jamming gang

A suspect who fled the scene of a shoot-out with police outside Bryanston Parallel Medium Primary in Sandton this morning may be part of a jamming device syndicate, police have said.

At 7.20am, police spotted a black Subaru in the school’s parking lot with a suspicious occupant inside, said Captain Kym Cloete.

“On approaching the vehicle, the male occupant pulled out a firearm and fired. Police tried to block his vehicle with their car but he was able to evade it.”

An exchange of gunfire ensued. While escaping in the Subaru, he hit another car. It is not known whether he was injured during the crossfire.

Police suspect the man may have been linked to a jamming device syndicate – who jam car alarm systems when vehicles are locked.

Cloete said the gang had been targeting primary schools in the Sandton area.

No injuries were reported.
