A schoolgirl has been suspended after allegedly stabbing a fellow pupil at DF Malan high school in Meyerton, the Gauteng education department has said.

“The school has suspended the (alleged) perpetrator and the school governing body will convene a disciplinary hearing for the learner,” spokesman Charles Phahlane said in a statement today.

“The head of the Gauteng department of education is instituting an independent investigation into the incident.”

He said the department was shocked by the incident.

The teenager is accused of stabbing another pupil in the neck with a pair of scissors after an argument during the lunch break yesterday.

Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said the 16-year-old victim was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

The suspended girl was in custody and due to appear in court soon.
