Schwartzel up against the best

2011-10-22 18:24

Reigning US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel is the only South African golfer who will tee up at this year’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City from December 1-4.

The annual showpiece usually sees a number of Mzansi’s players competing against some of the world’s finest in this competition.

Local golfing idols Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman have often featured among the big-name players included in the star-studded field of 12 players in the international line-up who will swing their clubs over four days at the Pilanesberg resort.

However, members of the media were caught by surprise this week at the player announcement at the tournament sponsors’ head office in Sandton, Johannesburg when only Schwartzel’s name was drafted into the glitzy line-up.

Schwartzel, the world number 13, played a great round of golf when he won the 2011 US Masters Championship at Augusta National for the first time earlier this year.

The lanky player will showcase his swinging agility against the world’s number 1, Luke Donald from England, a man who has made it clear that he will be competing for the coveted Sun City’crystal shield.

Defending champion Lee Westwood, also from England, is expected to set the lush Gary Player course on fire with his sizzling strokes proving his victory last year was no fluke.

Westwood, who was previously ranked the best in the world, has now slipped to the second spot.

The inclusion of Germany’s Martin Kaymer in the field will also boost the line-up.
