Secrecy bill committee announced

2011-12-02 10:49

Parliament today named 15 members of the ad hoc committee that will see the contentious Protection of State Information Bill through the National Council of Provinces.

The committee will meet on Wednesday next week to elect a chairman, the parliamentary communications service said.

It comprises 10 members of the ANC, two from the DA, and one member each from Cope, the Independent Democrats and the IFP.

The bill was approved by the National Assembly on November 22 by 229 votes to 107, with two ruling party MPs breaking ranks.

Critics, including Cosatu, have vowed to challenge it in Constitutional Court unless a range of provisions that threaten to restrict access to information and freedom of expression are amended.

DA leader Helen Zille suggested the opposition could use Clause 80 of the Constitution to refer it to the court within 30 days of the president signing it if the ANC drove it through Parliament’s second house as is.
