Security Minister attends wife’s court appearance

2010-02-05 10:12

PIETERMARITZBURG – State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele attended

the bail application for his wife Sheryl Cwele in the Pietermaritzburg High

Court today.

His appearance surprised journalists as he and his wife had been

estranged for more than four years, according to court papers.

The court gallery was full of Cwele’s relatives and friends.

Sheryl Cwele and Frank Nabolisa, a Nigerian arrested last month,

face three charges.

These are: dealing or conspiring to deal in drugs; procuring a

woman called Charmaine Moss to collect drugs in Turkey; and procuring another

woman, Tessa Beetge, to smuggle nine kilograms of cocaine from South

Brazilian police arrested Beetge in Sao Paulo on June 13 2008. They

found 9.2kg of cocaine concealed in her baggage.

She is currently serving an eight-year jail sentence in Sao Paulo

for drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, Cwele’s future as the director of health and community

safety for the Hibiscus Municipality hangs in the balance.
