Security officers sent to kidnapped principal’s school

The department of basic education in KwaZulu-Natal has dispatched security officers to the Waterloo Primary School in Verulam, north of Durban, following the abduction last week of the school’s acting principal, Kaise Ngcobo.

On Sunday, City Press reported that three men in a white BMW kidnapped Ngcobo at the school on Friday morning.

The kidnappers left her in Phoenix, unharmed. They allegedly told her that she would be killed if she returned to the school.

On Monday, the school’s governing body called an urgent meeting to discuss the matter. Fana Sibiya, chairperson of the body, said: “There is now security at the school. Officials from the circuit office arrived at the school on Monday and teachers demanded security as they don’t feel safe. There is now security during the day. Teachers had already written a petition.”

About the meeting, he said parents were very angry and demanded swift action. He said the meeting was attended by more than 900 parents and their message was clear:

» They want people to stop interfering in the process of the appointment of the principal;

» They want the police to find the culprit and make him/her pay; and

» They want a principal to be appointed immediately and they will not accept an outsider.

Failing that, they, the parents, are prepared to march against the department of basic education.
