More than 20 countries will take part in the inaugural Grid Cape Town Biennial, opening this weekend at the Castle of Good Hope. Through partnering with other photographic initiatives such as The African Artists’ Foundation, LagosPhoto and Egypt’s Darb 1718, audiences will experience Pan-African perspectives through the lenses of artists. The biennial’s theme is Constructions, and looks at how imagery, identity and architecture are made.

Audiences can anticipate works that challenge and inspire, like Young in Prison, a project that teaches juvenile inmates photography, a skill they can use outside prison. Another exhibition, Dutch Against Apartheid, looks back at efforts to support the liberation movement by displaying for the first time the anti-apartheid archives the Dutch handed back to South Africa in 1987.

The Grid Cape Town Biennial will run until March 15. Tickets cost R50 at the door.

The Castle of Good Hope is open from 9am
